The “PENTA” method

After many years of using the “4D” or “Double-diamond” method, we realized that the fifth “D,” the most important one, was missing. So we put it first.

In design, as a creative activity, it is more important than elsewhere to follow a method that guarantees control over the rigor and completeness of the stages of the process. This is useful for the design team and for the client, who is involved and participates in every stage of the process.

The stages of the PENTA Method should be understood as a sequence of iterations, the duration and complexity of which obviously vary depending on the project, and which we can summarize as follows:

D1 - DREAM

It is the starting point, the desire to achieve a goal, no matter how far away it may be or whether it is truly achievable. It is the sharing of goals and the drive to take the first step, leaving one's comfort zone behind for a journey guided by the desire to innovate and improve. And it is the phase that cannot remain unfinished or only partially experienced.

D2 - DISCOVER

The start of the project. Designers try to look at the world with fresh eyes, noticing new things and seeking inspiration. This is the time for gathering information and insights, reflecting on what they see, and sorting through what is new and interesting enough to form the basis for developing new ideas.

D3 - DEFINE

The definition and selection phase, in which designers seek to give meaning and priority to all the possibilities identified in the ‘Discover’ phase. Which aspects are most important and need to be addressed first? The output of this phase is a creative brief, a clear and concise document containing the key design issues for the client organization.

D4 - DEVELOP

The actual development of solutions, their prototyping, and the testing sequence. This phase allows designers to improve and refine design ideas, verifying their validity with simulations and user testing, prototypes, and MVPs.

D5 - DELIVER

The delivery and production phase, during which the product or service is finalized and launched. In this phase, feedback systems are also set up and tested, and the project documentation is released to the client.
